Synopsis
Henrietta, the legendary Dragon Slayer of the Kingdom of Bleuve, can't stomach the thought of one more kill. Yet, in order to save her dying mentor, she must go on one last quest. But will misfit companions, seasickness, and an ego maniacal king derail the quest for the healing stone? And will she be able to cut past her conscience and kill the dragon?
HENRIETTA THE DRAGON SLAYER
EXCERPT -- Chapter 1Battle-hardened and brave
Ready for the fight
Henrietta the Dragon Slayer
Swings with all her might
--From the chorus of theĀ Song of the Dragon Slayer
Henrietta strode away from the tavern, fists clenched so hard they hurt. At two paces from the forest edge, the ground crunched in the black night behind her. Even with her ale-fogged brain, she sensed the presence of a man, smelled on him soot, leather and metal, and knew he was armed, but wore no armor. She didn't have time for this.
"What do you want?" Henrietta whirled to face the thrill seeker, her long sword drawn, her long red hair whipping across her chilled cheeks. Above her head, the bitter wind keened through the forest trees.
The man hovered five feet-lengths away from her, out of sword reach, his face shadowed by the light of the tavern behind him. "I heard your story back there." His voice, thick with a foreign accent she couldn't place, held no compliment. "I hear you're looking for a new quest."
My Review
This was the perfect choice for a family read-aloud!
I read this book out loud to my husband, a teen boy, and a tween girl. The guys were a bit indifferent to it, so I’m not counting their votes or ratings, mainly because this book was an excellent example of girl power!
My daughter and I truly enjoyed this fantasy tale about Henrietta The Dragon Slayer, a brave, strong young woman who fought among and against the bravest and best knights. I felt like I was skipping along on Henri’s journey, felt the magic permeate the air in our family room, and I wanted to touch my side every time Henri touched the hilt of her sword.
I look forward to going on the next journey with Henrietta, as she learns more about The Dragon Stone. I’m so curious!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, Beth Barany, for this fantastical reading opportunity!
Amelyn, Thank you so much for reading this story aloud to your family and for the lovely review!!!! Hugs, Beth
It was our pleasure! We’re looking forward to the second book! I can’t wait to see how you’ve written the Dragon Stone into Henri’s next story! It’s just my style…a continuing story with NO cliffhangers! <3
