Synopsis
Jebediah has a secret that will change his world forever and send his people into space. The Amish world of Alabaster calls upon an ancient promise to escape destruction. Then end up on a cargo ship bound for the stars. But they are not the only cargo on board. Some of it is alive...or used to be. Now, with vampires taking over and closing in on the Amish refugees, these simple believers must decide whether their faith depends upon their honored traditions or something even older.
My Review
I am completely blown away by this unique book!
This may have been inspired by a campy fake cover and title posted on the office wall at the publisher, but Kerry Nietz turned the campy concept into some seriously good sci-fi/vampire/amish literature. I am so glad I picked up this book!
His sci-fi fantasyland was so believable. I felt as though I was someone from their base planet, being told this remarkable tale of survival and community. I believed in how the ship was run, the com devices, the ship’s indoor transportation system…everything.
The author’s take on vampires is like nothing I’ve read before (and I’ve read all the most popular vampire books…I consider those required reading for keeping up with today’s world…LOL!). Enjoy the surprises! They are many. You’ll know it’s getting REALLY good when you hit one of his low-key-with-a-big-punch cliffhangers at the end of a chapter. POW! “Jeb fell.” That was my favorite! Jeb fell WHERE??? WHAT happened??? Then the next scene happens elsewhere…
I’ve never read a book with Amish characters. I have watched a bit of reality television that depicted some young Amish people leaving their communities. The Amish were a brilliant addition to this story, balancing out the ultra-modern lifestyles of the “Englishers.”
So there you have it. A challenge to combine three seemingly-incompatible genres has become an admired, five-star favorite of a romantica novel junkie. This book was by a Christian publisher, and your middle-school kid or teen could read it and be thrilled by it. It IS Christian. What it is NOT is preachy. The highest level of romance in this novel is a hug and some googly eyes, but you will definitely feel the warmth emanating from a couple of couples.
5 Stars for Amish Vampires in Space! Bravo!
