Steven is a run of the mill guy, living a simple life that tips over into boring. He sees no way out of his dreary existence until he meets James, who is beautiful, charming, and helps to bring vivid color to Steven's dull life. But everybody has secrets, and when James's secret comes out Steven wonders if he should have stuck with boring…
This is a charming manlove short story, but…
…it has a pretty big problem. The problem is, I don’t really connect to the characters, because the story is told to me, not shown to me. The characters are well-developed in the physical sense. I get that James is tall, dark and handsome. But I don’t feel any chemistry, and, in fact, get a little uncomfortable with the two main characters staring at each other for no apparent reason. I don’t get the thrill I should from the hand-holding. I LOVE that there is no sex in this book. I don’t need that in a love story. But, without sex, I need to feel the love.
This book has a terrific plot, perfect for a short story. If the story is played out more in my head, I do believe the author would have been rewarded with my tears (a sure sign of a good book for me). I truly wish I could feel the angst after James’s big secret is revealed. I want so much more from this little book, but it falls a little short and is just okay for me.
